Hello Class of 1980!

After our 20th reunion last July, I began work on the first Garden City High School Class of 1980 Directory and Memory Book. I received hundreds of photos from classmates, some family, couple or individual photos, many from the weekend of the reunion and even some vintage shots from years past. Many photos were scanned and placed throughout our class directory near that person’s name, address, phone and e-mail. We had a tremendous response and thanks to you all for sending in those great photos.

I started the book by writing a short piece called “Reunion Revisited” in which I recall my various communications leading up to the reunion. Included is a “Then and Now” section reviewing people who sent in before and after photos. These are Brad Duffner, Kevin Allison, John Paterakis, and Steve Millward for the guys and Lisa Willis, Lynne Smith and Tracy Nimmo for the girls. Thanks to all the brave souls, especially the guys, who nominated themselves for having changed the most.

Next, there are seven pages of memorials, photos and poems, including the following tributes: Introduction by Doug Housman, to Kristy Frazier by Steph Chisholm, Chris Brink, William Emmert and Karen Deegan; to Larry Straton by James DeCastro, Steve Millward; to Russell Kent by Steve Rosen, Matt Digan, Bob Capreol and Bruce Northam; to Cathy Umbach by Barbara Dies Dowd, Doug Housman and James DeCastro; to Mark Franz by Dorothea Pamas and Sean Lynch; to Stephanie Scalchunes by Laura Roellig Moynihan and to Toni Turchiano by Peggy Delahunty Farrell and Sue VanWickler Heckel. Thank you to the moon to all who contributed memorials, your words of friendship are greatly appreciated! I have also added a poem sent in by Sean Lynch plus two other poems, “Heaven’s Gate” and “An Irish Prayer.” We have photos of Kristie, Russell, Cathy and Larry thanks to Theresa Larkin Gillen, Barbara Dies and Doris Dwyer and Michael Noonan.

Then, the actual A – Z directory starts. From page 12 – 29 is a complete list of names, most listing address, phone and e-mails. Over the course of the fall, we were able to track down a lot of missing people and over 100 of us are now participating in an on-line e-mail group at GCHS1980@egroups.com thank to the efforts of David Bartges, who volunteered to be the moderator. After the directory is one page of e-mail messages regarding the reunion. Finally, I downloaded various book reviews of Bruce Northam’s two best selling world travel books along with writing a tribute to the amazing Steve Rosen.
